Excelling at visuals

I consider photography, film and design as tools to visualisation. A beautiful image, for instance, is not a goal in itself. What does it aim to achieve? Or communicate?
In the end, every image has to carry a message while being a work of art in its own right.

Striving for purity and serenity

Photography is about making choices. It can be better to show nothing rather than dress up a subject into something it’s not. This is important during and after shooting. Striving for perfection. Creating purity and serenity that are second to none.
I am at my best on location: Outside the studio. In my work I always involve the environment – working with what is there. Improvising.
The Cold Feet series was originally intended to be set in a green landscape. On arrival in the area, however, everything was covered in snow. We could barely drive the car there. In the end we deliberately incorporated the snow and the result was this series.
On location, you are not in control: You have to accept that. What you find is what you work with. This challenge is part of my drive.
Each frame as a perfect picture

If I had to describe my film projects in one word, it would be: Cinematography. I believe each frame should be a perfect picture, in terms of purity, sincerity and aesthetics. The frames together tell the story.
Combining visual elements as imagery, sound and graphics is my strength. With corporate promotional videos this should result in the ultimate brand experience. This means more than only a logo at the beginning or end.
One of my favourite examples is the video project with CDMD in Cambodia. Everyone matters The way this has been filmed bears a strong resemblance and connection with the imagery which I created earlier with the same client. This video is a brand experience – and breathes CDMD.
Balance is the key

Design is all about balance between imagery and graphics. This includes the use and distribution of empty spaces – mutual reinforcement of elements is the essence of great design. This balance needs to be sustained right down to the millimetre.
In my work as a conceptual designer, I translate stories and messages into visual concepts. Tell me your story and I translate and abstract. This results in a comprehensive visual experience – whether for websites, interactive design or 3D work.
In my work with Hivos for a grant proposal, (Minibuzz) I enlarged several visual elements. This was done specifically to enhance the feeling of communication, as the core concept was connecting and communicating.
